Help – Somebody is Calling People Using my Phone Number!
If this is happening, the first step is to contact support and our anti-fraud department will verify whether the phone calls in question have originated from our system. If they have, we will immediately take measures to identify and block access to unauthorized users of your phone system.
In cases where the calls did not originate from your phone system, you have likely been the victim of “caller ID spoofing” where somebody is placing calls and sending your caller ID number.
Protecting your account is one of our top priorities and we never want to see one of our valued customers consider another carrier because of the pesky calls. Regrettably, Spoofing has become much more common across all carriers, cellular and fixed landline alike. The CRTC offers a number of great tips at https://crtc.gc.ca/eng/phone/telemarketing/identit.htm to help safeguard yourself from scams as well as an option to report the calls.
You can report this incident to your local police or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (1-888-495-8501), a national service jointly operated by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Ontario Provincial Police and the Competition Bureau.
We also offer a number of options for blocking incoming spam callers through our portal. In this case if people are using your number as the spoofed ID, I encourage you to report the call to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre since there is currently no way to keep those spoofed callers from using your number at this time but we want to work with the CRTC for ways to investigate the scammers and keep it from happening in the future.
