How to Prepare for Your EMAK Telecom Installation
A smooth EMAK Telecom installation depends on a handful of small preparations made before the technician arrives. Run through this checklist a few days before your install date — most of it is straightforward, but the firewall and wiring items can delay the install if they are not addressed up front.
Pre-Install Checklist
People and access
- Make sure your IT administrator is available throughout the installation in case our technician needs to coordinate on the network or firewall.
- Confirm our technician has access to the server room and any other rooms where phones or network gear are installed.
- Make sure your computers and old phones are accessible — clear furniture, boxes, or obstructions away from cable runs and outlets.
Network and firewall
- Verify that the ports and IP addresses required for EMAK service are unblocked. This is especially important if you run a managed firewall (SonicWall, NET+ ACDQ, clinics with regulated networks, etc.).
- If you use a router other than the one supplied by EMAK Telecom, your IT administrator may need to enable QoS to keep voice quality consistent.
Information sheet
- Fill out the EMAK Telecom information sheet and email it to [email protected] before the install date.
Wiring and power
- If data cables need to be fished through walls, arrange this with a cabling professional before your installation.
- If electrical wires need to be fished through walls, arrange this with an electrician before your installation — our technicians are not authorized to perform electrical work.
- If you do not have a PoE switch, you will need a free power outlet at every location where a new phone will be installed.*
After the Installation
Once the EMAK Telecom technician finishes the installation, you can sign in to the EMAK portal to set up speed-dial keys and manage calling features right away.** See feature codes and phone user guides for next steps.
Notes
* Power bars are not included in the installation.
** Login credentials are emailed on the installation date or upon request.
*** Additional data cables — beyond the ones included with the phones — are billed separately.
Installation FAQ
Do I need to do anything if EMAK Telecom supplied my router?
No special configuration is needed — our supplied router is pre-configured with the correct QoS and firewall rules. Just make sure it is in place and powered on for the install.
Why does the firewall whitelist matter?
Strict firewalls and content filters can silently block SIP signalling or RTP audio, leading to one-way audio, dropped calls, or registration failures. Whitelisting up front avoids spending install time troubleshooting blocked traffic. See firewall whitelist.
What is PoE and do I need it?
Power over Ethernet (PoE) lets a single network cable carry both data and power to a phone. If your network switch supports PoE, no power outlets are needed at the phones. If it does not, plan a free power outlet for every phone location.
Can EMAK do the data cabling?
EMAK Telecom installs phones and configures the system; pulling new cable runs through walls is handled by a separate cabling professional. Coordinate that work to be completed before our technician arrives.
What happens if my IT administrator is not available on install day?
The technician can still install the phones, but anything that requires firewall or router changes may have to be completed afterwards — which can delay full service. Wherever possible, arrange for your IT administrator to be reachable.
