Your data stays in Canada. We will show you exactly where.
Every call recording, voicemail, transcript, fax and contact sits on Canadian servers — as do the databases behind them and every backup we take. Not an American data centre with a Canadian badge on the website. EMAK is PIPEDA and Loi 25 compliant, and we will name the provider behind every line of it.
Quebec privacy law makes you assess and document every transfer of personal information outside the province before it happens. Keep your phone data in Canada and that work simply never starts.
Included in every plan — from $20/extension/month.

Ask your current provider where the recordings actually sit.
Most cloud phone systems sold in Canada run on American infrastructure. That is not a scandal — but it is a question you should be able to answer before a client, an auditor or your own lawyer asks it.

Yes — that last row is deliberate. We are not SOC 2 certified and we are not going to imply otherwise. There is more on that in the questions below.
What protects it once it gets there.
Location is only half the answer. Here is the rest of it, in plain terms.
Encrypted in both directions
The signalling that sets up your call travels over TLS and the audio itself over SRTP, so nobody between your phone and our servers can listen in. Once a recording lands, it is encrypted where it sits.
Only the people you choose
Decide who can play a recording, open a fax or export a contact list — and see a dated record of who actually did. When a client asks who listened to their call, you have an answer instead of a shrug.
Processing runs under a signed data processing agreement. Healthcare data is excluded outright.
Your calls do not train anyone’s AI
EMAK does not train AI models on customer data. If that ever changes it will be opt-out, and healthcare data is excluded entirely without your explicit written consent. Transcription and voice generation run under a signed data processing agreement.
Keep it for a day. Keep it for seven years. Keep it forever.
Most providers decide how long your recordings live and tie it to whichever plan you are on. A clinic keeping files for seven years and a restaurant that wants last week deleted have genuinely different needs, and neither should have to change plan over it.
You set the retention period yourself, per type of data, from one day to indefinitely. Change it whenever your obligations change.
An excellent and secure product, wrapped around outstanding customer service! The team at EMAK Telecom truly understand the importance of providing a reliable, feature rich and easy to use phone system.
Where this matters most.
Some businesses care about this more than others. If you are one of them, start here.
Ask us anything about where your data goes.
We answer in plain language.
The questions auditors and lawyers actually ask.
Is my data stored in Canada?
Yes. Call recordings, voicemail, transcripts, faxes, contacts and call history are all stored in Canada. Our application servers and our databases both run on OVHcloud infrastructure in Canada, and backups are held in a Canadian region with Backblaze B2. Nothing on that list leaves the country.
Does Canadian privacy law require my phone data to stay in Canada?
Not strictly, and any provider telling you otherwise is overstating it. PIPEDA and Quebec's Loi 25 are about accountability rather than geography — you stay responsible for personal information wherever it travels. What Loi 25 does require is that you assess the risk and put a written agreement in place before personal information goes outside Quebec. Keeping the data in Canada means that assessment never has to be done in the first place.
Is EMAK PIPEDA and Loi 25 compliant?
Yes. We are compliant with PIPEDA federally and with Quebec's Loi 25, and our handling of call recordings, transcripts and faxes is built around those obligations along with HIPAA-aware practice for healthcare customers.
Is EMAK SOC 2 certified?
No, and we would rather say so plainly than dress it up. SOC 2 is an audit of a company's internal controls, and we have not been through one. What we can tell you is exactly where your data sits, who can reach it, how long we keep it, and that it is encrypted in transit and at rest. If a SOC 2 report is a hard requirement for your organisation, tell us early and we will be straight with you about whether we are the right fit today.
Do you use my calls to train AI?
No. EMAK does not train AI models on customer data. If that ever changes, taking part will be optional and you will be able to say no. Healthcare data is excluded entirely and would never be used without explicit written consent. Transcription and voice generation are handled by an enterprise AI provider under a signed data processing agreement.
How is my data protected in transit?
The signalling that sets up and manages a call is encrypted with TLS, and the audio of the call itself is encrypted with SRTP. Stored data is encrypted at rest.
How long do you keep recordings and voicemail?
For as long as you tell us to. Retention is configurable per type of data, from a single day up to seven years or indefinitely, and it is included on every plan rather than gated behind a tier. Set it to match your professional obligations and change it whenever those change.
Who inside my business can listen to recordings?
Only the people you authorise. Access is controlled per user, and playback, downloads and exports are logged with a timestamp and a name, so you can answer the question rather than guess at it.
What uptime do you provide?
Our live system status is published publicly and you can check it any time, including our history of incidents. On the human side of reliability, we handled 4,145 support calls over the last twelve months, answered 94% of them, and the average caller waited 31 seconds to reach a person.
Is it legal to record business calls in Canada?
Canada operates on one-party consent, meaning at least one person on the call has to know it is being recorded. In practice most businesses announce it at the start of the call, and EMAK can play that announcement automatically. If you handle personal information, your own privacy obligations still apply to what you do with the recording afterwards.
