Do these ports replace the full whitelist?
No — this is a quick reference. The full whitelist also lists the domains to allow (provisioning, firmware updates, email) and gives example rules for SonicWall and NET+ ACDQ firewalls.
Why does RTP use such a wide port range?
Each call uses a pair of RTP/RTCP ports, and the range must cover every call that could happen at the same time at your site. The 16384–32768 range is the standard for carrier-grade SIP servers.
Does SIP run over TCP or UDP?
Both. EMAK Telecom phones usually use UDP by default, but TCP is required for some mobile softphones (for example, Groundwire on iPhone — see Groundwire setup).
My calls connect, but the audio is one-way or cuts in and out.
This almost always points to an RTP problem — the port range is blocked, or a firewall service (SIP ALG, deep packet inspection) is interfering. Turn off SIP ALG on your router and confirm that the UDP range 16384–32768 is fully open. See improving VoIP call quality.
