How to Use a Headset on a Yealink Phone

A wired or Bluetooth headset turns your Yealink desk phone into a hands-free workstation — useful for back-to-back calls, taking notes during a conversation, or just keeping your hands free for typing. This guide walks through connecting a headset, switching headset mode on and off, and answering calls directly from the headset.

Step 1: Connect Your Headset

Connect your headset to the Yealink phone using the instructions in the headset’s manual. The connection options depend on the model — most use USB or an RJ9 phone plug, and some Yealink models support Bluetooth headsets directly or with the BT41 dongle.

Step 2: Activate Headset Mode

Press the HEADSET key on your Yealink phone. A headset icon appears on the screen when the mode is active. On some models, the HEADSET key lights up when the mode is on.

Once headset mode is active, every call you place or answer will be routed to the headset automatically — no more picking up the handset.

Step 3: Answer Calls From the Headset Itself

Many headsets let you answer and end calls without touching the phone:

  • USB or Bluetooth headsets: press the call button on the headset to answer or hang up. Follow the headset’s manual for the exact button.
  • RJ9 (RJ11 phone-plug) headsets: you need a headset adapter to answer calls directly from the headset — use the EHS36 for Yealink T4-series phones or the EHS40 for T5-series phones. Without the adapter, you can use the headset for audio but you must press the answer key on the phone itself.

Deactivate Headset Mode

Press the HEADSET key again to turn headset mode off. The icon disappears (and the key light turns off if your model has one). Calls will now ring through to the handset and speakerphone again.

Yealink Headset FAQ

Why is the headset key not lit when I press it?

Not all Yealink models have a backlit HEADSET key. Look for the small headset icon at the top of the screen — if the icon is shown, headset mode is on. If your model has a backlit key and it does not light up, contact EMAK Telecom support to check the firmware and configuration.

Do I need an EHS adapter for my USB or Bluetooth headset?

No. EHS adapters are only needed for RJ9 wired headsets that you want to control (answer/hang up) from the headset’s own button. USB and Bluetooth headsets carry that signalling natively.

Which EHS adapter do I need?

Use the EHS36 with Yealink T4-series desk phones (T46S, T48S, etc.) and the EHS40 with T5-series phones (T53W, T54W, T57W, etc.). When in doubt, contact EMAK Telecom support and we will confirm based on your phone model.

Can I use a Bluetooth headset like AirPods?

Yes — see How to Connect AirPods to a Yealink T53. The same Bluetooth pairing approach works for other Bluetooth headsets, as long as your Yealink model has built-in Bluetooth or you have the Yealink BT41 dongle.
